After asking a few people and giving it some more thought, I decided to do a session on our popular first person shooter “Puki: The Swarm”, instead of “Top 5 Flash Problems Solved” at FlashForward New York in July. I think it will be an informative and entertaining session, and should tie in exceptionally well with the workshop on OOP game development that Glyn Thomas is presenting on day 1 of the conference.
I really want to thank everyone for posting their ideas for problems to solve, and apologize for not solving them in NY – I might use them in a future session, though maybe not given all the cool stuff MM is showing off in 8ball.
I’ll be looking at the creation of the game from both creative and technical perspectives (though the main focus will be technical). I’ll explore the creative path for the project, then launch into the technical details, including:
- Game architecture and OOP
- Code re-use
- 3D engines
- 3D audio
- Optimization tips and tricks
- Preloading
- Securing highscores
- Discouraging cheating
- Dissuading “game pirates”
And yes, before anyone bugs me about this… I’ll be posting glic news this Monday.
Hi,
Is there any chance that you could post slides or videos of the presentation for the rest of us who live on the other side of the ocean?
I am really interested of what you have to say.
thanks
seb,
The slides and source will be posted to my session notes page, within a week of the conference:

What a shame.. I was really looking forward to the “Top 5 Flash Problems Solved”. Dissecting a simple game..?! Well, well might be more fun for you. :/
Sorry to disappoint. I think this should be a great session (and yes, I think it will be fun – both for me, and attendees), with a pretty deep look into the code. A big concern I had with the top 5, was that as I explored the problems I’d like to solve (ie. the ones that would be worth going over), and looked at the suggestions from people, I realized it would be hard to cover 2 such topics in an hour, much less 5.
As mentioned, I also think it will tie in really well with the game dev workshops on day 1. I’m hoping to do some more hard-core sessions after the release of 8ball.
Grant,
thanks for posting the slides!
Seb
