Gallery Incomplet Updates for Dec

I’m going to keep a little log going on the blog to track what has been updated or added to Gallery Incomplet. [Note: Moved to incomplet.gskinner.com] This should help keep me motivated to continue updating it, and keep readers informed about my ongoing experimentation (because much of it won’t be blogged here on a real-time basis). Because of the holidays, I’m going to post the December log now.

Updates:

– Made the pod shadows dynamic based on y position (was previously always a 45 degree drop shadow)

– Added logic to track viewed items between visits using LSOs. Previously viewed items will now be displayed with a folded corner

– Minor updates to loading and transitions

Additions:

– Fluids. Playing with fluid simulation in a psuedo 3d environment.

– Clouds/Fog. Using multiple layers of perlin noise to simulate moving through clouds or fog.

– Transcendence. Building on clouds, transcend this mortal plane.

– LightningStrike. Dynamically generated lightning, thunder and lighting effects.

– ElectricJellyfish. Not quite sure where this is going, but it’s kind of neat.

  1. Great work!!! But dont you think your just showing off a little. I mean you put all this great stuff up and don’t let anyone see how you did it. Again great work just getting sick of see everyone with sites that just show off like “look what I can do” but offer no real substance.

    Dude – forget what Joe says – sites that say “look what I can do” are what keeps this industry interesting.

    Joe: You have a nerve talking to Grant like that, after the massive amount of free code he’s given out over the past few years. He doesn’t owe anything to anyone – experimental work isn’t usually open sourced, not because it’s secret, but because releasing stuff takes time and effort. If you have a specifc question about an exhibit, why don’t you try asking the question on here? You might even get an answer…

  3. Re lightning:

    the shape is great, and the rest also – apart from one thing: it’s made from half-transparent pieces, so you get lighter ‘spots’ in the joints, while the parts between joints are darker – it ruins the illusion for me, because a lightning never has darker parts within it, does it…? it’s a light source, and a strong one, after all..

    if you need overall transparency, maybe you could build the shape invisibly with opaque parts, then make a BitmapData representation of the whole (the tech. you’re using often already), and then set the transparency to the bmp…

  4. Actually, the light/dark pieces were an intentional addition after looking at pictures of lightning. The lighter joints are an unfortunate side effect with no real (processor friendly) way to get rid of them, but the imho the result is more realistic even with them, than with a single brightness for the entire path of the lightning.

    Draw them to a movie clip with 100% transparency, then set the alpha value of the entire clip??
