So, what am I up to?

I’ve had a number of people wondering what the heck I’m up to. Why isn’t gModeler getting updated? Why isn’t FlashOS2 done? Why don’t you pay your bills? (just kidding on that one — usually 😉 The short answer is, I’m up to a bit of everything… read on, and I’ll try to explain.

On the community front, I co-founded the Edmonton Flash User Group, and have been spending a fair amount of time on developing it. I’ve also been speaking at conferences – FlashInTO [notes], FlashForward NY [notes] and SIGGRAPH [notes], and the upcoming FlashParade in France. I’m working on a chapter about Object Oriented Programming for the forthcoming ‘Flash MX 2004 Demystified’ from Macromedia Press, as well as a couple of articles (all of which I will announce here when they are complete). I would also like to get back into doing some instructing.

Professionally, I am working on a number of varied client projects – including: a nifty 3d engine in Flash; the first retail consumer packaged product created in Flash (AFAIK); and a presentation engine for corporate CDROMs/web presos. I’m also doing subcontracting work with some amazing design and interactive firms. Then there’s the ongoing process of chasing new work, which all freelancers are intimately familiar with.

In addition to work that pays the bills, I’ve also been working on version 3.0 of gskinner.com (which should be out soon), this blog, re-tooling FlashOS2 to play nice with MX2004, and working on gModeler 1.0. Plus all my usual experimentation.

Pile on a few home-improvement projects, some travel, friends and, family, and you have a comfortably filled life.
